Hirafu is where Niseko stops feeling like a Japanese village and starts feeling like a resort town. It holds more places to stay than the other four areas combined, and the mix leans hotel: of the 149 stays listed here, 94 are hotels and only 30 are whole houses. That density is the reason to be here — it is the one part of Niseko where you can walk out at nine in the evening and find somewhere open — and it is also the reason the streets are busy in February and the taxis are not. The median peak-season stay comes in around the middle of the Niseko range, which surprises people who assume the busiest area is the dearest one; Hanazono is three times more expensive, and Hirafu's spread is simply very wide, from bunk rooms to whole chalets on the same street.
