Kutchan is a working town rather than a ski village — the municipal seat, with the station, the supermarkets and the hospital. It has the lowest median peak price of the five areas, and the highest proportion of stays that stay open through summer, because the town does not depend on snow to have a reason to exist. The trade is time: you are a bus ride from the lifts rather than a walk from them, every day, in both directions.
