How the stays are gathered

A place gets into this site when someone can actually book it from outside Japan. We read the listing platforms that serve Niseko — the large international ones, the Japanese ones, the villa and hostel specialists — and take each property's own structured data rather than retyping what a page displays. Names, scores, review counts and price bands come across as machine-readable fields, so a number here is the number the platform published, not a number a person copied.

One search does not find Niseko. Searching in English and searching in Japanese return different sets, and so do "Grand Hirafu", "Kutchan" and the onsen villages — the same valley, split across queries. We run them all and merge, then keep only what an English-speaking reader can actually reserve.

How we choose which stays get a page

Not every bookable room deserves a page of its own. A place earns one when there is enough public evidence to say something true about it — enough guests have stayed and written, and there are enough photographs to see what you would be walking into. A brand-new listing with no reviews and two pictures gets named where it is relevant and linked to its platform, but we will not write a page pretending to know it.

This means the smallest area on the mountain can still hold some of the strongest pages on the site, and the busiest one carries a long tail we send straight to the platforms. Size and substance are not the same thing here.

How we read reviews

A score means little without the count beside it. Nine-point-four from twenty guests and nine-point-four from nine hundred are different claims, and we treat them differently. We also compare a place against its own kind — a ski-in hotel against ski-in hotels, a ryokan against ryokan — because guests grade an onsen inn and a chalet on different things.

Where a property appears on both an international platform and a Japanese one, the gap between its two review counts says something useful about who actually stays there. We read that, and say so when it matters to you.

What we update, and when

Scores, review counts and price bands are read on a date, and that date travels with the figure. Seasons change what is true: most of the valley closes when the snow goes, and a page that is right in January is wrong in July unless it says which it means. Where we know a place shuts for summer, the page says so.

How we cover a stay

Two rules. We publish what we can source, and we name what we cannot. When a property describes itself as ski-in ski-out and the ground disagrees, we write what the ground says. When we have measured a distance we give the measurement; when we have only the property's word, we say it is the property's word.

Distances on this site are measured from the centre of Hirafu unless a page says otherwise. That is a different thing from the distance to a lift, and we do not use one to stand in for the other.

What we do not do

No property pays for a place on this site, and no property can pay to change what a page says. We do not run sponsored posts, we do not sell listings, and we do not remove criticism on request — though we will correct anything that is wrong.

Affiliate disclosure

When you book through a link here, the booking platform pays us a commission. You pay the same price you would pay going direct. Links that earn us something are marked as such in the page's markup, and where we think a platform is the right place to book but pays us nothing, we link it anyway.

Commission does not decide which places appear, what order they appear in, or what is written about them. If it ever did, this site would be worth nothing to you and we would rather not run it.
